MNBC Staff Numbers and Salaries Keep Going Up

ree

(March 3, 2023) Métis Nation British Columbia (MNBC) is increasing their staff so much that they are running out of space at their fancy Station Tower offices in Surrey that they moved into just 3 years ago. It is now estimated that staffing numbers at MNBC exceed 200 people which is nearly 4 times the number of staff they had only 4 years ago.

In addition to the big increase in staff, the Board of Directors has also approved a new salary grid that moves senior managers up into pay ranges that by most reasonable estimates would be considered high for most non-profit organizations.

The new salary range for the chief executive officer is now $225,000 to $300,000 per year while the new annual salary range for chief officers is from $145,000 to $225,000. MNBC currently has 5 chief officers, and then they have 4 executive directors each of whom is now in the range of $120,000 to $150,000 per year. MNBC has 4 of them, as well as at least 11 senior directors and directors who are making anywhere from $105,000 to $135,000 per year. All of these positions, most of which are new, also come with full benefits.

MNBC has enormously increased the number of overall management positions, and now have assistant managers, supervisors, coordinators, program and operations administrators, and assistants to many of these positions. It’s no wonder that the cost of paying all the staff has shot up to more than $20 million this fiscal year, from $13.9 million last year.

At a Board meeting in February, Directors were advised that they do not have enough work spaces for staff because “…of the significant staff growth…”, even though they had already added to their original space in the high-rise office tower. Now they’re looking at expanding to the 10th floor of the tower which has over 11,000 square feet of space available.

BC Métis Leader and former MNBC President Clara Morin Dal Col said, “This is a classic case of empire building where staffing positions and salaries for upper management just keep increasing. What are they going to do when government begins to turn the money flow off? They don’t get money from anywhere else, except from government.”
