National Indigenous Peoples Day – June 21

(June 21, 2026) This is the 30th anniversary of National Indigenous Peoples Day and we hope all Métis people will join with other Indigenous peoples in Canada to celebrate and enjoy our respective cultures and history in Canada.

Take some time today to remember our ancestors wherever they lived and raised their families whether in the Red River Valley or in other parts of the historic Northwest and then moved to other communities, including here in British Columbia.

Remember how they contributed to helping to build our great country. For many it was not an easy life, but playing the fiddle, jigging, laughing and sharing stories helped make life bearable and our true Métis culture lives on today.

Métis people are recognized in S.35 of the Canadian Constitution, 1982 as being one of the three Aboriginal Peoples of Canada, and the Canada-Métis Nation Accord in 2017 explicitly recognizes the Métis Nation as being distinct with its own collective identity, language, culture, way of life and self-government in the historic Northwest prior to Canada’s westward expansion following Confederation.

The President of Red River Métis British Columbia, Clara Morin DalCol says, “Each and every day Métis people should be proud of who we are, never forget where we have come from and honor our ancestors who continue to guide us each and every day. I know I continue to be very proud of my ancestors in Ile-a-la-Crosse, Saskatchewan and I am proud and thankful to be Métis.”
