What will MNBC do? Federal Government says budget cuts are coming!

(July 14, 2025) The federal government has announced that they are planning to reduce the overall operations budget of the government by billions of dollars to reduce the deficit, and Indigenous Services Canada will be part of that budget cutting process aiming to reduce the department’s spending by $5 billion between now and the 2027/28 fiscal year. Métis Nation British Columbia (MNBC) will be hit with these cuts.

Last year and then earlier this year in advance of the federal election we flagged budget cutting as being inevitable given Canada’s huge multi-billion dollar annual deficit.

MNBC receives the bulk of its annual budget, a budget estimated to be at least $110 million, from the federal government through various federal departments such as Indigenous Services Canada, Crown – Indigenous Relations, and Employment and Social Development Canada.  MNBC will not escape the budget cuts.

So how will they ever cope?

  • Will they have to sell the President’s brand-new 2025 SUV that they just bought for his use and whose name is that SUV in?

  • Will they reduce Board salaries which cost over $1 million last year?

  • Will the CEO take a pay cut on her $290,000 annual salary and remuneration?

  • Will they reduce their travel related expenses and per diems which last year totaled $375,000?

  • Will they get rid of their consultants?

  • Will they lay off some of their staff that is estimated to number between 350 and 400 and cost upwards of $40 million per year?

  • Will they put on hold some of their proposed multi-million dollar building projects?

Clara Morin DalCol says, “This Board only knows how to spend money. It will be a whole new experience – and challenge – for them to make the tough decisions on cutting costs.”

The former President of MNBC says, “Let’s see if they can make the tough decisions, or will they just keep on spending money on their salaries and travel, and consultants and staff as if the money is going to keep on flowing.”

She says, “Given that their treasurer hasn’t posted an annual budget in three years, MNBC citizens can only guess as to what MNBC might have to cut, but three things for sure – they will keep their high salaries…they will keep travelling and claiming expenses and per diems, and the President is highly unlikely to give up the new fancy SUV.”

Ms. Morin DalCol says, “As President of Red River Métis – British Columbia I invite you to join our new grassroots organization based right here in British Columbia and 100% committed to making a difference for Métis people in British Columbia through issue work and advocacy with the provincial and federal governments.”

She says, “You can join us and still keep your membership with another organization.”
