(July 14, 2025) The federal government has announced that they are planning to reduce the overall operations budget of the government by billions of dollars to reduce the deficit, and Indigenous Services Canada will be part of that budget cutting process aiming to reduce the department’s spending by $5 billion between now and the 2027/28 fiscal year. Métis Nation British Columbia (MNBC) will be hit with these cuts.
Last year and then earlier this year in advance of the federal election we flagged budget cutting as being inevitable given Canada’s huge multi-billion dollar annual deficit.
MNBC receives the bulk of its annual budget, a budget estimated to be at least $110 million, from the federal government through various federal departments such as Indigenous Services Canada, Crown – Indigenous Relations, and Employment and Social Development Canada. MNBC will not escape the budget cuts.
So how will they ever cope?
Will they have to sell the President’s brand-new 2025 SUV that they just bought for his use and whose name is that SUV in?
Will they reduce Board salaries which cost over $1 million last year?
Will the CEO take a pay cut on her $290,000 annual salary and remuneration?
Will they reduce their travel related expenses and per diems which last year totaled $375,000?
Will they get rid of their consultants?
Will they lay off some of their staff that is estimated to number between 350 and 400 and cost upwards of $40 million per year?
Will they put on hold some of their proposed multi-million dollar building projects?
