True Métis in British Columbia Now Have New Organization to Call Home

ree

(March 7, 2025) True Métis in British Columbia now have a new organization to call home. Red River Métis – British Columbia Assn is a registered non-profit society to represent the interests of true Métis in the province.

In making the announcement today, the President of the Association Clara Morin DalCol says, “My priority has always been to defend and protect our Métis Nation identity and I won’t deviate from that. I am delighted to join five other true Métis in British Columbia on the Board of Directors of Red River Métis - British Columbia who all share the same principles and goals for our new Métis organization.”

Ms. Morin DalCol says, “The establishment of Red River Métis – British Columbia is the perfect home for true Métis in British Columbia. While some other established organizations have become pan-indigenous, Red River Métis – British Columbia will be the one and only indigenous organization in the province committed to looking after the needs and protecting who we are as true Métis for future generations.”

She says, “We are a Métis organization representing true Métis at the grassroots. That has been lost in British Columbia in the past few years and Red River Métis British Columbia will fill that void. Many Métis in British Columbia are looking for a new organization that will protect who we are as a people, our culture and our history, and promote those key elements through effective advocacy at all levels on behalf of the interests of true Métis.  They want an organization to join that is committed to looking after and representing the best interests of our true Métis in British Columbia. They want an organization they can be proud of and one they can trust to do what’s right.”

The initial top priorities of Red River Métis British Columbia are:

  • To have an organization for true Métis in British Columbia that is effective and that provides representation for true Métis at the grassroots level.

  • To deal with the issues that matter most to our members whether they are issues to be addressed with the provincial or federal governments.

  • To provide services to Métis people based on the availability of funding

  • Addressing issues regarding Métis children and families, health affordability issues for Métis families and seniors, the protection and promotion of the history and culture of Métis people in British Columbia, and working with government to define s.35 rights for Métis.

Membership in Red River Métis British Columbia requires applicants to have a Métis ancestral connection within the last 4 generations, and proof of the connection must exist within the applicant’s genealogy.
