Tri-Council Members Put Federal Minister in Embarrassing Position on Very Critical Issue

(April 22, 2021) The Tri-Council today put the federal Minister of Indigenous Affairs in an embarrassing position when they objected to MNBC President Clara Morin Dal Col and MNC President Clément Chartier being part of a virtual meeting on the critical subject of co-developing federal Indigenous health legislation.

“I found it ridiculous and offensive that President Poitras of Métis Nation Alberta on behalf of the Tri-Council and Lissa Smith would tell the federal Minister Marc Miller that MNC President Chartier and I should not be on the call,” said President Morin Dal Col. “Here we were ready to talk to the lead federal minister on the most critical subject for Métis people that being the co-development of the distinctions-based Indigenous health legislation and I’m ready to speak on behalf of Métis people as national Métis Minister of Health, and the Alberta Métis Association President says we should not be on the call”, said President Morin Dal Col.

“We have always followed the practice that we do not bring up our political differences in front of federal ministers because they are internal to our nation, so President David Chartrand of the Manitoba Metis Federation very wisely excused himself, President Chartier and me from the virtual meeting so as not to put the federal minister in a very difficult spot,” said President Morin Dal Col. She added, “We will have a follow-up meeting with Minister Miller to deal with this critical subject of co-developing Indigenous health care legislation for our Métis people.”
