(February 22, 2021) Because of Covid-19, Métis Nation British Columbia (MNBC) held its annual general meeting virtually from February 18 to 20, and hopefully it is the one and only MNBC AGM to be held virtually.
The AGM presented challenges. There have been reports of technical difficulties, of some MNBC Citizens having trouble registering, and of Citizens not being recognized to speak, even though they had their hands up electronically. There have also been complaints that while some Citizens were constantly recognized and allowed to speak, others had to wait a long time before being given a chance to speak, if at all.
MNBC President Clara Morin Dal Col said, “There were some important matters to be discussed, and it really is unfair that some Citizens who wished to contribute to the discussions and debate may not have been able to do so.” She said, “That is not democracy.”
President Morin Dal Col has attended every MNBC AGM since 2009, including the last four as President, and was looking forward to attending this recent AGM. Sadly, she was not able to attend as President because of the actions of the nine Board Directors on January 18, 2021, which have effectively removed her from office.
President Morin Dal Col is seeking to have the Supreme Court of British Columbia nullify the actions of the nine Board Directors. President Morin Dal Col has maintained that the actions of the nine Board Directors amount to a thinly disguised attempt to overturn the results of MNBC’s election of just four and half months ago, in which she was re-elected by a significant margin. By their actions, the nine Board Directors are trying to silence MNBC Citizens, who voted to maintain President Morin Dal Col’s leadership in supporting the suspension of Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) from the Métis National Council for jeopardizing the integrity of Métis Nation citizenship.
