MNBC Posts Remuneration for Board Members That Raises More Questions

(November 6, 2021) Métis Nation British Columbia (MNBC) posted remuneration amounts for the Board members on Friday, November 5, 2021 that they claim were effective April 1, 2021, but the amounts and effective date raise more questions.

The rates which MNBC calls “base renumeration” instead of the correct term “base remuneration” are posted as follows:

· President $110,000

· Vice-President 82,500

· Executive Appointment 54,933

· Regional Directors 48,267

· Women & Youth Representatives 48,267

Former MNBC President Clara Morin Dal Col said, “These numbers do not tell the whole story about how much the Board members are paying themselves”. Ms. Morin Dal Col said, “Note the use of the term ‘base’ meaning that this is what they get as a base salary because they are being paid extra for their Committee work and for holding portfolios resulting in thousands of more dollars going into each of their pockets.” She added that, “The two Board members sitting on the Board of the Métis Financial Corporation of BC are also being paid several thousand extra dollars over and above their high salaries from MNBC”.

The BC Métis Leader said, “When I was President I pushed back against big salary increases for Board members because many Métis families were and still are struggling to make ends meet, especially during the uncertain times created by Covid-19, but this was one of the main reasons the Board members removed me – because I would not go along with their salary demands. Now that I’m no longer there, they jump their salaries and make the increases retroactive to April 1, 2021.”

Here’s some questions that need to be asked:

· Why was the increase in the base salaries not revealed before now? For example at the AGM in September?

· What does “Executive Appointment” mean? For example, does it mean that each of the members of the Executive Committee including President, Vice-President, Treasurer and Secretary receive an extra $54,933 on top of their base salary?

· How much extra does each Board member receive for sitting on a Board Committee? Is it $5000 or $10,000? Some Board members sit on more than one Committee.

· How much extra does each Board member receive for holding a portfolio? Is it $5000 or $10,000? And what happens if they hold more than one portfolio, which some do?

Clara Morin Dal Col said, “When you do the math, these Board members are being paid tens of thousands of dollars, in a number of cases more than $100,000 per year for part-time jobs, and they voted for their own increases. It is a blatant conflict of interest voting for their own outrageous salary increases – a vote that they should be ashamed of. “
