(December 17, 2024) Métis Nation British Columbia (MNBC) has been hiring a lot of staff since 2021, every month they add more people to the payroll, and the number of MNBC employees now is believed to be over 300, and perhaps as many as 550.
In the interests of responsible governance which includes accountability and transparency, here’s a few questions:
How many employees do they actually have? They have not reported a number in several years. Why the big secret? Most likely because it is embarrassingly high.
What do all these employees do? We don’t know because they don’t say but we do know from their job postings that they have plenty of administrative assistants, coordinators, supervisors, managers, directors and navigators running around.
How much is it costing for all these staff? MNBC hasn’t posted an operational budget since April 2022 so we don’t know for sure, but in that last posted budget, staffing costs totaled $20.5 million and that was with about 120 to 150 employees, so if the number of employees has risen by even 3 times to 360 or more, that number could now be as high as $50 to $60 million per year.
How much do their top senior officials make? Based on a salary grid that was approved by the MNBC Board of Directors almost two years ago the salary range for the chief executive officer is now $225,000 to $300,000 per year while the annual salary range for chief officers is from $145,000 to $225,000. MNBC currently has 5 chief officers, and then they have 4 executive directors each of whom is now in the range of $120,000 to $150,000 per year. MNBC has 4 of them, as well as at least 11 senior directors and directors who are making anywhere from $105,000 to $135,000 per year. All of these positions also come with full benefits.
